Introduction to Child Shock

Shock is inadequate blood flow to vital organs and body tissues

Elevating the child's legs approximately 12 inches reduces blood to the legs and holds blood in the core of the body where it is needed most.

Types of shock: bleeding, cardiac, trauma, severe allergy, spinal injury, poisoning, fainting spell

Signs of shock: pale, cool, most skin with weak and rapid pulse, nausea and increased respiratory rate.

The body has two basic requirements for life: oxygen and glucose (sugar). These items are carried by the blood to feed the body's tissue. Shock occurs when the body is denied these basic needs. Care should be directed to preventing shock before it occurs, if possible.
